What is BEST?

BEST — Broadcast-Enabled Streaming Television — combines ATSC 3.0 broadcast delivery with broadband content delivery, allowing additional television services to reach compatible ATSC 3.0 receivers without requiring the full video bitrate to be carried in the broadcast lighthouse.

AVSend is the Silicondust CDN built for delivering ATSC 3.0 BEST services.

Broadcast-enabled. Broadband-delivered.

BEST uses the ATSC 3.0 broadcast and broadband paths together. The broadcast path provides the DASH manifest while AVSend delivers the video through broadband.

Broadcast path

  1. ATSC 3.0 station
  2. DASH manifestCarried in the ATSC 3.0 broadcast signal

Broadband path

  1. Encoder
  2. AVSend CDN
  3. VideoDelivered over broadband, not over RF

ATSC 3.0 television

Receives the manifest by broadcast and the video by broadband.

Additional services can be made available to ATSC 3.0 televisions while consuming minimal lighthouse bandwidth.

More services from limited broadcast capacity

ATSC 3.0 BEST allows broadcasters to make additional channels available through the ATSC 3.0 television experience while using broadband for video delivery.

More channel capacity

Make additional services available without carrying the complete video stream in the lighthouse.

Broadcast + broadband

Use ATSC 3.0 broadcast delivery and broadband content delivery as one television service.

Built for broadcast operations

AVSend combines delivery, monitoring, analytics and geographic controls in a system designed specifically for ATSC 3.0 broadcasters.

24/7 health portal

Know what is happening from encoder to receiver

The AVSend health portal provides continuous visibility into the systems involved in delivering a BEST service, with end-to-end health monitoring of the CDN and 24/7 portal access for your team.

  1. Encoder

Encoder health monitoring for every encoder feeding the service.

  2. Delivery

Monitor content delivery through the AVSend CDN.

  3. Broadcast

Monitor the broadcast side of the service.

Automatic failover supports redundant encoder and upload configurations.

See what viewers are watching

AVSend provides real-time viewing information through an interactive broadcaster portal.

Channel analytics

Understand viewing by channel.

Program analytics

Measure program viewing and trends.

Ad analytics

Advertising reports with viewership, so you can give advertising partners insight into their campaigns.

Real-time viewership information.

Redundant from the encoder forward

  • AVSend supports dual-redundant encoders with dual-redundant WebDAV uploads from each encoder.
  • Encoder health monitoring enables automatic failover.
  • Content can be uploaded through the public internet or through direct peering.

Works with established broadcast encoders

AVSend integrates with these encoders:

  • Harmonic XOS
  • Ateme TitanLive
  • Synamedia vDCM

Keep BEST delivery within the intended market

The DASH manifest is delivered through the ATSC 3.0 broadcast signal rather than through the AVSend broadband CDN.

Built into BEST delivery

  • The DASH manifest serves as the first layer of in-DMA protection, delivered only by broadcast.
  • AVSend blocks broadband delivery of the manifest.

Additional DMA enforcement available

  • IP location validation
  • Cloud and VPN blocking
  • ASN allow/block management: ASN controls can allow or block IP ranges associated with specific organizations.

Tell viewers what went wrong

AVSend can present customizable video messages when a viewer cannot receive a service, including out-of-region, VPN or other delivery errors.

Viewers see a message you control instead of an unexplained playback failure.
