A TV tuner is a device that makes it possible to connect a TV signal to devices. The more tuners an HDHomeRun unit has, the more devices can be connected and viewing different TV shows. They are also used in recording multiple shows at a time - thus, with three tuners, you can record three separate shows at the same time.
Over-the-air broadcast refers to TV signals that are sent and received via an antenna, as opposed to ones you recieve from a satellite or cable connection.
An unencrypted digital cable signal is one that does not require an M-Card, which is also known as a CableCARD. A CableCARD is often used in a set top box to allow the viewing and recording of television. If you have premium channels such as HBO or Starz, you would be utilizing an encrypted cable stream and thus, would be using a CableCARD. If this is the case, you require the HDHomeRun Prime. Otherwise, you will need to purchase either the DUAL or the PLUS based on your other needs. Contact your cable provider to verify if you require a CableCARD.

A home network is a group of devices such as computers, game systems, and mobile devices that connect to each other through a networking device such as a router, wireless access point, or gateway.
On Windows, you can use Windows Media Player to watch and record your shows. For all operating systems, you can also use VLC, XBMC, and NextPVR. On Linux, we also support MythTV. Other home theater software may be compatible, but those are not directly supported by SiliconDust tech support.
For Android and Amazon, we provide the HDHomeRun VIEW app available in the Google Play Store and the Amazon Store. We are currently developing an iOS app. Other apps may support HDHomeRun devices, but are not currently supported by SiliconDust tech support. Our devices are discoverable by the XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3, and you can use the media center applications provided by Microsoft and Sony, respectively, to configure HDHomeRun devices to run on those units.
All of our devices are designed to work over a wireless home network and will be able to broadcast in either Standard Definition or HD. When referring to HD quality on our site, we specifically mean that our devices are capable of up to 1080i streaming output. However, if your digital cable signal is broadcast in standard definition or 720p or 720i, our devices cannot upgrade the quality. Standard definition, in terms of television, refers to the resolution of 640px wide by 480px tall in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
