HDHomeRun connection through WAN

Postby it-norden » Mon Jul 25, 2011 7:05 am

Hi.

I would like to connect to my HDHomerun, when Im on buisnesstrips, and the tv in the hotels are lousy. Could I some how force software to look for the HDHomeRun on a specifik IP adress and port# .

I can see the HDHomerun units webpage, via my fixed IP-adress and the port forwarding I made, but I cannot get the software to look for my unit.

I have a 20 MB upload via optic cable, so I should be able to stream it with no problems.

Thanks for any help

You might be able to get this to work by setting up a VPN on your home network and then connecting to it remotely. You could then use your HDHR as if you were connected locally to your home network.

I'm not sure what OS you're using, but Windows 7 makes it pretty easy to setup a VPN (http://www.pcworld.com/article/210562/how_to_set_up_vpn_in_windows_7.html). Also, there are versions of DD-WRT and Tomato that you may be able to load onto your router that include OpenVPN.

Could someone please tell me what ports and protocols HDHomeRun communicates on.

Discovery uses 65001/udp, control uses 65001/tcp, and video streaming comes from 5002 or 5004/udp.

Thanks - this is helpful for poking holes in the firewall.
Any guidance on commands for the HDHomeRun_Config? How do I get the HDHomeRun_Config(Gui)-Device page point to the WAN address?

The GUI and HDHomeRun software will not discover the HDHomeRun if it is not on the same subnet as the PC.

Please follow this thread topic for accessing the HomeRun via VPN.

Couldn't you use hdhomerun_config ffffffff set /tuner0/target localhost:1234 then use vlc on your remote machine and open udp stream localhost:1234 after setting up an ssh tunnel from the remote machine to your house on port 1234?

As long as you have ssh access to the machine behind your firewall containing hdhomerun_config, this seems like it should work fine.

Similar issue with local "WAN" PC

Postby spycake » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:04 pm

I've got a similar issue, but with a twist: I have a 4G USB modem which I connect on my Windows PC and then share via ethernet cable to the WAN port of a wireless router, so multiple devices around the house can use the same internet connection simultaneously.

However, the HDHomeRun is of course on a LAN port of that router and cannot be seen by the "WAN" PC. This is particularly problematic as I would like to have an "always on" server performing both functions (sharing the internet connection and recording programs from the HDHomeRun).

I'm using Internet Connection Sharing in Windows, so the "WAN" PC network card gets a local address on the LAN (192.168.0.1), which the router then uses as its gateway address. So ostensibly the WAN PC and the HDHomeRun could be on the same subnet, correct? Is there anything I can do in Windows or on the router to enable communication between them, while keeping the internet connection sharing active?

Disable the DHCP server in the router and connect the gateway PC to a LAN port instead of WAN. The PC will act as the DHCP server for the network and everything should have access to everything else.

Answer here: http://www.phreefi.com/2012/01/accessin ... -from.html

BTW, I've verified 5 mb upload is good for SD broadcasts.... anyone know what is needed for HD? I'm thinking 15 mb upload maybe?

I have setup OpenVPN and I can ping HDHomeRun which on same subnet
I have forward UDP/TCP port 65001 and port 5002~504
But when I run HDHomeRun setup, it says device not found?
Can you assist me why?

Why are you forwarding ports if you are coming in on a vpn? Have you setup the vpn server on your router?

You need to be on the same subnet for the HDHomeRun to work so you should use TAP rather than TUN. TAP is bridged so your remote client will get an ip address in the same subnet as your LAN. You don't want that subnet to be the same as the host subnet of your remote location so it is best to use an uncommon subnet at home like 192.168.xxx.0 where xxx is not the common 0 or 1 so maybe something above 10 like 63 or 122 or whatever.
