Stream direct to iPad

Postby jakematic » Thu Jun 23, 2011 2:07 pm

Just got my HDHR last night and love the PVR function with EyeTV on Mac and export to Apple TV.

Am a little disappointed that there has to be a running computer in the middle to stream though.
I understand the transcoding issue and CPU requirements to do it.

Was hoping to be able to stream directly to an iPad 2, especially during a power outage since we are in hurricane and ice storm country.
My cable modem/router and the HDHR are on my big UPS with the iMac,
and the HDHR gives me a lot more functionality than a battery powered TV would.
It's not feasible to leave the iMac running on UPS but it will run the other devices for a very long time.

So.... after much research I found a solution but it's a little less than elegant.
Installed GoodPlayer app on the iPad since it appears able to stream just about anything.
Using hdhomerun_config the target for the tuner is set and voila it works.

In Linux:
Code: Select all
hdhomerun_config homerun set /tuner1/target 192.168.0.124:5000

On GoodPlayer tap web icon and put in this address:
Code: Select all
udp://@:5000

Streaming this way works quit well with very little choppiness even in HD and the audio is perfect.
Only trouble is it would be nice to not require the Linux box to initiate the stream and change channels.

Any thoughts on how to better implement this?

Thanks-Jake[/code]

Thanks for the instructions. This worked well for me with SD sources. 720p HD sources were watchable but did exhibit some choppiness. 1080i HD sources were basically turned into a slide show.

I wonder if there is an easy way to stream HDHR from VLC to Goodplayer.

The ultimate would be an iPad app that automates all of this. HDHR integration with Air Video would be very cool.

On a related note, I found this iPad app that can interface with the HDHR and measure signal strength.
Signal GH
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/signal-gh/id289580769?mt=8

I bet the author of that may be able to figure something out.

Glad it worked for you on the SD.

Seems to me this would be a fairly simple app to make for an iPad or iPhone.
All the pieces are there - it's just a matter of putting them together.

The fact that the author is communicating with the HDHR is 90% of the work.
We just need a "catcher" client player to receive the stream and an integrated channel control.
iPad can clearly handle the transcoding, but HD is a big load on a network.

Will see if I can get in contact with the guy and ask him about developing something. I'd pay $10 for it in a heartbeat !

His website is http://web.mac.com/grhowes/Generally_He ... _Help.html

I'd suggest anyone interested in this contact him too.
The more requests he or someone else see's the more likely they are to put the work into it.

Could you possibly detail just a little more on the requirements to set this up in Linux? Where did you make this change/add this code? I'd like to experiment with this a bit myself.

I'm also one that would pay $10 for a dedicated app.

Telly (www.telly-app.com) would be exactly what you want... (airvideo-like, but live ATSC TV)

except HDHomeRun support is coming in next month (Nov 2011).

It appears HDHomeRun support to iPad2 is already available, IF:
1. you must have an iPad2
2. you must have an HDHomeRun Prime
3. you buy the $18 app
4. you only stream standard def programs

Even then, the reviews for the app aren't exactly stellar.

I am currently working on an app that will allow streaming directly to iPad without a PC or Mac turned on.
My app does the controlling of HDHomeRun and starts the stream and hands it over to GoodPlayer.

So far the app is very rough. It finds devices and is able to scan for channels on my DVB-C HDHomeRun. Also streaming works nicely, but GoodPlayer is only able to play one of my HD channels acceptably.

I would like to start gathering some beta testers. Not that the app is anywhere near ready yet. But I need some people to tell me, whether scanning also works for other types of HDHomeRun, and other channel maps.

I'm excited to test this app out. Does it allow web video production streaming to the iPad or the iPad 2? I like the idea that it controls the HDHomeRun channels.

I've been using the app now for over a week and it works great for me. I don't try watching HD channels. I've used Air Video for HD videos before and unless you convert them to MP4 before hand, the live conversion (which is what would be required for the Prime) is unwatchable.

The only bug I've found with the iPad app is that if you're watching TV, then exit out and then go back to watch TV later on, the app sometimes can't get a channel lock. It's easily fixed by manually closing the app (double click home button on iPad, find the HDHomerun app icon, hold down on it until it wiggles and close it down), but I think the developers need to add an "Exit" button that completely shuts down the program and prevents it from running in the background.

Also, if it could access program guides and do scheduled recordings, that would be extremely helpful.

Can you share the beta? Or do you have an ETA for release?

From the website FAQ (emphasis mine);
Q: Does TV Streamer support HD channels
A: TV Streamer will let you stream any TV channel, also your HD channels. But typically GoodPlayer is not able to play back HD channels with a high framerate. Some channels might work, depending on the bitrate, but don't count on it.

This seems to be a pretty massive limitation!
