Compatible DLNA apps for Android?

solved!

OK I should do all my research THEN post. Problem is not skifta or my old phone. I started trial and error just downloading other players. Found one called wondershare player (free) that works. My LG revolution plays acceptable quality (nothing great but that's my phone) SD using this with skifta. As you might expect, an older phone can't really handle the HD stream without some sort of transcoding.

Placeshifting feature of skifta also looks like it may work (finds tuners and channels but player gets stuck "preparing" while loading video). I am not planning to test thoroughly over 4G without an unlimited plan though. Would have to wait until I can get on a separate wifi network from my tuner.

gbox midnight also tested ok with this software combo but only SD and wired ethernet. No HD, and to be any good with wifi this box needs an aftermarket wifi adapter. The one in it is garbage.

MediaHouse with VLC (beta 2012-12-06) works pretty well on SD, not so great on HD. That's on an HP Touchpad with CM10. Only thing I could get working.

My GNex can't really handle HD, but I got a combo of Media House and Wondershare working.

On Samsung phone Allplay is supposed to be DLNA compliant, but I have not used it since it requires you to register for an account.

Both Skifta and Allplay are unable to load the channel lists.

MediaHouse App can locate the channels but no video players I have installed can play them

XBMC does work, put my performance was terrible on my GS3

I get the list on Skifta, but I need to pick a player and MXplayer doesn't work.

XMBC

XMBC working very nicely on Android 4.2 with audio. The interface is very clean indeed.

There are so many to choose from, but this is the one that loaded up flawlessly.

"XMBC Nightly APK for Non-NEON Devices"

MX Player

ES Media Player

Don't know if it's a problem MediaHouse or if players can't handle mpeg2. I'm on FIOS and most channels should be unprotected (tried to view a broadcast channel). Tried it from my 2008 Samsung LN52B750 and it works! It is a huge chore to navigate the flat channel list, especially with fios' hd channel's starting at 500. We certainly need folders to breakdown the channel list or at least have a favorites / recent folder.

Your samsung like my sony xperia sl do not have mpeg2 codec onboard and it needs to be in h.264 for me.
Can't get MediaHouse to see the prime or anything else on the network but it sees TwonkyServer?
I have tried vplayer, mxplayer, Twonky, Twonky Video. I have used HDHomerunTV with Vplayer as a transcoder just fine. Twonky Video comes the closest to actually opening a channel; it turns on a solid tuner light and creates a notation in the log but shuts down with a black screen and notice then jumps to the next channel and tries to tune again.

for those saying they need transcoding to h.264, you might want to try that wondershare program I mentioned above. It's free so can't hurt to try. It's in the play store. Won't work for everyone given the wide range of things called "android," but I have an old LG revolution phone and have heard that same thing about it (that it is hardware-limited on video format). All the other programs people have listed trying here didn't work for me, but that one did. I have nothing to do with the dev or anything, just started downloading programs until something worked. Also works well on my gbox midnight running a newer OS.

Remote potato streaming from my PC is still more stable but this works for me.

Yesterday I was able to take care of the registration problem and today have only had time to run a quick test on Nexus 7 with Skifta (and MXPlayer) which can now find the proper devices.

All the channels show up, but all play with heavy skipping/pixelization and no audio.

Tried configuring MX Player for hardware decoding but that does not work at all.

Won't have much more time to play with it this weekend, but now at least it's reasonable to assume that most Android DLNA apps should be able to find the device and channels. Just need to figure out how to get watchable video with audio.

XMBC works well on my HP Touchpad running CyanogenMod 9. Playing Non HD Content there is very little shuddering. The image looks so good you hardly need HD.

Skifta working with latest VLC beta! If you're not getting it try a Prime restart. That's all it took for me. This is on HP Touchpad with CM10. SD very good, HD jumpy.

iMediaShare (Amazon free app of the day 1/20).
Kindle Fire HD 8.9

Finds HDHomeRun Live DMS as a source under Local Network

App gives you a choice, 'Choose a Screen'. Plays HD and SD on my Samsung TV when I select it. (of course this is redundant since it plays native). If I select 'My Android', comes up with choice 'Complete action using', only have MX player installed, so it is the choice.

Plays SD channel for a few seconds to perhaps minute, then just goes back to channel selection. Attempts to play HD come back with 'Unable to Play Video'. Seems to be MX Player issue, the DLNA function of the app seems promising.

Side note, I have XMBC on my DROID Bionic, and it gets the same 'unable to play video' message trying to play both SD and HD video. Having trouble with Amazon at the moment trying to install iMediaShare on my Droid Bionic, purchase comletes but it doesn't download. Will update when I get a chance.

No more time to play today, so posting this message with limited testing :(
