Compatible DLNA apps for Android?

Postby Vapian » Thu Jan 17, 2013 10:25 pm

[Moderator]: The "Compatible DLNA apps for Android/iOS?" thread has been split into Android and iOS threads... the iOS related posts can be found in the Apple forum.

Noticed the announcement sticky about needing to use the "HDHomeRun Live DMS" device instead of the "Prime Tuner" devices.

Haven't been through a bunch of apps yet, but on a Nexus 7 the Skifta DLNA app finds the tuner devices but not the Live DMS device.

Will continue to check out other possibilities, but thought it worth asking whether there are any recommendations for Android or iOS apps that will support the Prime's new capabilities. . . .?

Hi,

If you see "HDHomeRun Prime Tuner" devices but not "HDHomeRun Live DMS" then the DLNA feature isn't enabled on the HDHR.

What is your device ID?

MediaHose UNpN/DLNA APP (free version) seems to work OK.

I'm guessing the DLNA feature just isn't enabled - have run through a few options and some find nothing, others find only the tuners.

Try Skifta for phones with Qualcom processor like the SGS3. I don't have mine working yet, but at least it sees the Tuners. I can stream to my DLNA compliant LG TV.

On Samsung phone Allplay is supposed to be DLNA compliant, but I have not used it since it requires you to register for an account.

Both Skifta and Allplay are unable to load the channel lists.

MediaHouse App can locate the channels but no video players I have installed can play them

XBMC does work, put my performance was terrible on my GS3

On my Android US-based S3, I can use MediaHouse to browse the channel list but I can't play any of the channels. I choose all the players I have installed and they all say 'Can't play this video':
MX Player
Video Player
ES Media Player

Don't know if it's a problem MediaHouse or if players can't handle mpeg2. I'm on FIOS and most channels should be unprotected (tried to view a broadcast channel). Tried it from my 2008 Samsung LN52B750 and it works! It is a huge chore to navigate the flat channel list, especially with fios' hd channel's starting at 500. We certainly need folders to breakdown the channel list or at least have a favorites / recent folder.

My results

Postby larryc23 » Fri Jan 18, 2013 8:46 am

Touchpad with CM9

a) tried Mediahouse which found Prime correctly and has Cable TV and Premium Cable TV containers appear properly but won't play any channel I've tried ("vplayer can't open this file"). VPlayer (with DLNA plugin) shows the device properly but won't play anything.

b) HomeRunTV did not work prior to the update and did not work prior to install of VPlayer but now is working properly and quite well.

c) Will try XBMC if someone can provide a link for the specific instance they're using (nothing posted matches what I've been able to find in the play store).

iphone 5
a) tried instatv lite and it did not work
b) tried skifta - sees device, sees cable/premium cable folders, sees channel list... won't play (comes up to 'rewind, play, forward' control with blank screen... pushing play button does nothing)

*edit* more iphone5 tests

c) MLPlayer Lite - sees HDHomeRun Live DMS in the server list, shows Cable/Premium Cable folders, crashes to 'home screen' when apparently trying to get channel list
d) 8player lite - click Movies, sees HDHomeRun Live DMS, sees cable/premium cable folders, but shows both empty.
e) NasViPFree - shows HDHomeRun Live DMS as a server but despite increasing timeout to max (60 secs) it never shows anything once the HomeRun is clicked.
f) MediaConnect - doesn't see/show device.

Make sure to run the channel scan on your Windows PC. After that you should be able to do the channel list on Skifta. I did that on my iphone last night. I still didn't get any broadcast though :(.

similar issue

Postby beckyricha » Fri Jan 18, 2013 10:51 am

Mine is setup and working fine, but not on the android yet. Tested with XBMC for an older winXP PC and works beautifully, just as described.

Skifta on my phone (2.x version android) finds the tuner, opens and finds the channels, but none of the players will run it. Similar to other descriptions here, I've tried Vplayer, MXplayer. Haven't tried ES player but won't bother given the other reports. I thought I read this was streaming MPEG2, which these players say they can support. Anyone found a player that works? I've read that only newer android chipsets will support MPEG2 no matter the player, but don't know if that is true or why. If so, guess I'm back to transcoding and hosting from my PC for this device. Remote potato w/live TV plugin does this well enough.

I can't go with XBMC on this device because of its older OS. I have it on a newer gBox device and will give that a go shortly.

Somewhat working

Postby zer0keefie » Fri Jan 18, 2013 11:17 am

I have it in an almost-working state on my Galaxy S2. I'm using Skifta and the VLC beta. SD channels seem to work that way, but the HD version of the same channel caused my whole phone to freeze. No idea if that was VLC's fault - still chasing that down.

I had to grab the VLC beta from http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=102250 because the play store claims its not available in the US.

update from above post

Postby beckyricha » Fri Jan 18, 2013 11:47 am

Still no mxplayer or vplayer with skifta, even on newest version gBox midnight. Does work sporadically with XBMC, only ethernet because this device's wifi is garbage. None of my remaining issues with that piece are with Silicondust but the early software level of xbmc for android and the not so great gbox hardware.

However, my earlier mxplayer/vplayer/skifta problems were apparently not my older OS.

Ditto on the same issues others have had. I have a Galaxy Nexus phone and Toshiba Thrive tablet.

I can see the channel lists in 2player and BubbleUPnp, but the streams will not render in the 2player native player, MXPlayer, or the Android Video Player.

I haven't tried XBMC on the phone yet, but it works on the Thrive. SD streams are good, HD unprotected streams are jumpy, but that's to be expected. XMBC doesn't use hardware acceleration on the Tegra 2 devices.
