Had there been anymore feedback from the Silicondust guys on the topic of future PS3 support. The HDHR is a great product and with the number of PS3s out there it would be a great combination.

I guess the problem is Sony isn't going to do this. And you need to pay a bunch to get a PS3 dev kit to do it yourself. That's after Sony certifies you as a developer. So I think chance is slim at this point.

But just think how good that would have been. Turn a PS3 into a DVR. And since the only tuner support is the EU only box, imagine how many it will sell if a US version is available now Digital OTA is finally here.

Hmm. I was thinking more in the line of streaming directly to PS3 from HDHR. I guess it's too much code to stuff into the device?

They could probably do it, but it probably wouldn't do what you want it to do. I think there is a basic misunderstanding of how DLNA works. Sony has implemented DLNA media player capability for the PS3. It needs to connect to something that provides DLNA media server capability. If you want to have full DVR capability then the DLNA server has to have someplace to store the video if you pause it. The HDHR does not have such a capability so it could not provide DVR functions. Sure, Silicon Dust could provide a very basic DLNA live streaming capability that would basically let your PS3 be a TV tuner, but it could not be a DVR, which is what I think most people want (most people have their PS3 hooked up to a TV with a tuner in the first place, so they would be gaining nothing if Silicon Dust provided this functionality). I doubt many people would buy a HDHR for use with a PS3 if all they got was the tuner capability without DVR functions, so it would probably not be worth the effort for Silicon Dust to provide such a capability.

It would probably be fairly simple to write some software that runs on Linux or Windows that was a DLNA media server that talked to a HDHR and provided very rudimentary DVR capabilities (i.e. pause/rewind/ff/etc.), but then you'd want record capability, and then scheduled recordings, etc. At that point you might as well install a full DVR package like MythTV.

I understand there's no way to put recording function directly to HDHR itself and I didn't ask for it.

A live streaming directly to PS3 is much better than firing up a PC for that. But yes, lacking DVR probably make it much less attractive to most people.

Adding DLNA server function, however limited, will make HDHR ready to use right out of the box for all the PS3s, Xbox 360s, and media player boxes without a PC. I guess this is more useful to people with displays like front projector that doesn't have a TV tuner connected.

Best case is an app on PS3 that drives HDHR directly. But that's probably asking too much from Sony.

Many NAS boxes today include DLNA management/storage. If SD could add programming support to allow pairing a HDHR to a DLNA NAS box to create a hybrid DLNA server (with live, recorded, and timeshifted TV), it might open up quite a market. If the memory and processor of the HDHR are sufficient to pull this off, I'd probably pick up another HDHR and a used PS3.

Hey reading though this I didn't know if there were any updates. It would be great to have the capability to at least watch live tv through the PS3. I can tivo using one my other PCs if I really can't watch the show at the time of use. You'd think something could be integrated into the main PS3 page... even free apps like media portal or something that can access the streaming tv... tivo would be even sweeter but I'll take standard streaming just as well.

seconded. it would be huge for me (i.e., without the need to send a second translated stream over the network).

let me add one thing---your forum support is terrific. thanks.

+1

I already have a Mediatomb DLNA server set up for watching recorded videos on the PS3 -- is there some way I can use that to tune the PS3 in to the HDHR live stream? I don't need DVR capabilities, and I don't even need the ability to change the channel! Is there a URL I can type into the PS3 browser maybe? It does support http streaming.
